Phnom Penh’s legendary live act Electric Universe returns with a brand-new chapter: The Next Universe. For 15 years, the project (founded by Berlin producer Nick Meta alongside US musicians Tim Sirois and James Speck) has fused live synthesizers, strings, grooveboxes, and DJ culture into hypnotic, psychedelic jam sessions. From stages across Cambodia to virtual performances in Second Life, the band has built a cult following.

Now evolving once again, The Next Universe unites original members Tim Sirois (synthesizer) and Nick Meta (grooveboxes, FX) with French musicians Anthony Armenti (bass, percussion), Fabrice Marion (guitar), Cambodian DJ Sam TR8 (drum machines), poetic interventions by Antonio Pineda, and a final mix by DJ Tommy Schultz.

Expect electronic beats colliding with acoustic and electric instruments, layered with spoken word and immersive, trippy visuals. Free entrance.

Meta House’s Mini Museum is proud to present two sculptures by Sopheap Pich, setting an early sculpture in dialog with most recent work.

Born in Cambodia, Sopheap Pich left the country with his family as a refugee at the end of the Khmer Rouge era, later settling in the United States. After studying at the School of the Art Institue of Chicago and first exhibitions in America he returned to Cambodia in 2002 and opened his atelier in Phnom Penh. His works has been shown in international museums, galleries, and art fairs.

Working primarily with bamboo, rattan, and locally sourced, recycled materials Pich employs e.g. traditional weaving techniques to create sculptural forms that are both intimate and monumental. His work is rooted in a great fascination for fundamental forms in nature, and a great sensitivity to materials.

This exhibition gives us insight into the artists creative process by relating his sculptural work with his graphic work The show is a journey of artistic creation as both a conceptual and deeply personal act.

The late British photographer Tim Page (1944-2022) was one of the pre-eminent photographers of the Vietnam War and Cambodia’s UNTAC times. In 1997, he co-published the book “Requiem”, featuring many thousands of pictures by journalists who were killed in the Indochina Wars. Photos from this book are on currently on display at the ECCC’s Resource Center Phnom Penh.

DANGER ON THE EDGE OF TOWN (1991, 51min) follows Tim Page, who sets out to discover what happened to his friends in Cambodia 20 years ago; REQUIEM (20 min) captures Tim Page and other famous war correspondents on their return to Vietnam; A NEW PAGE (2013, 26 min) documents Tim Page’s last photo project about land rights, including village exhibitions in the Cambodian countryside.

Known for his iconic Spaghetti Western scores (e.g., The Good, the Bad and the Ugly), he scored over 400 films, winning two Academy Awards, three Grammys, and six BAFTAs during his illustrious career.

“Ennio” (2021) is also a documentary film about the composer, directed by Giuseppe Tornatore. It chronicles his life, from his early work to international fame, featuring interviews and archival footage.
