The two-part documentary series JUNGLE ATLANTIS (2014, 120 min) follows an archaeological team in Cambodia as they use new laser scanning technology to uncover the mysteries of Angkor Wat and the medieval world’s greatest metropolis.

Terzani was posted in Asia for almost 30 years and was able to cover some of the most important historical events in the region. He was one of the few western journalists who witnessed the fall of Saigon and also covered thoroughly the predicament of Cambodia during the Khmer Rouge regime. Meanwhile he was able to capture the culture and traditions of the people in Asia which significantly helped building bridges between East and West.

Yet in one of the 20th century’s most extreme examples of the effects of politics on popular culture, Cambodia’s pop scene — along with virtually every other manifestation of modern society there — was brutally stamped out with the 1975 arrival of the Khmer Rouge, whose nearly four-year reign led to the deaths of 1.7 million people.

Since then, pre-Khmer Rouge pop has survived in fragments, but the history behind it has remained frustratingly incomplete. Now, after a decade of research by an American filmmaker, John Pirozzi, that history has been told thoroughly in “Don’t Think I’ve Forgotten: Cambodia’s Lost Rock and Roll” (2014, 105 min).

A philosophical fairytale (the title means “once upon a time”) steeped in the ceremonial traditions of Bhutan and shot in a remote village whose inhabitants actively participated in the cast, the picture has a modern prologue and epilogue suggesting its intentions to be both timeless and universal.

BONNE NUIT PAPA (2014, 101 min) is a moving film about conciliation, connection, and farewell. It documents Marina Kem‘s search for her father’s story. A father who was strange to her in two regards; strange because of his Cambodian origins, strange because of his silence.
