First conceived as a seven-minute short film in 2008, “Loving Vincent was realized by Dorota Kobiela, a painter herself, after studying the techniques and the artist’s story through his letters
Each of the film’s 65,000 frames is an oil painting on canvas, created using the same techniques as Van Gogh by a team of 125 artists drawn from around the globe. The stunning film won Best Animated Feature Film Award at the 30th European Film Awards in Berlin and was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 90th Academy Awards.

Viva Riva! (2010, 98 min) is unprecedented: a story set in contemporary Democratic Republic of the Congo full of intrigue, music, and a surprisingly frank approach to sex. It merges the pleasures of Nollywood with sleek camerawork, satisfying genre thrills, and a rare look inside the very heart of the continent.

Viewers would be excused for believing they were watching genuine footage of Phnom Penh days after the city’s liberation. In fact, the Czechoslovakian-Cambodian production was made after the Vietnamese had occupied the city – but only just.

Forgotten for decades, the feature film NINE CIRCLES OF HELL (1988, 105 min) directed by Milan Muchna has finally been subtitled in English. Back then, it was the first Cambodian feature film screened at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.

Please ber our guests for a video version of a deeply unsettling one-man stage play that provokes its audience by probing the mind of Kaing Guek Eav, ‘Duch’, – chief of Tuol Sleng prison – who rationalized Khmer Rouge atrocities and mass murder under the weight of obedience and fear. But beneath Duch’s confessions and his justifications of his monstrous actions, the audience can find a human being – a man.

This play offers no overt opinion, no editorializing making the huge question it asks so unsettling. It would be far easier to answer if he wasn’t.

Written & directed by Matthew Robinson of Khmer Mekong Films; performed by Sok Sothun, a renowned Cambodian actor who himself suffered under the Khmer Rouge regime.
