Join award-winning interdisciplinary artist Mugabi Byenkya as he returns to Phnom Penh for the first time in 20 years. An internationally touring vibrant performer, Mugabi has entranced audiences at over 100 shows, in 50 cities, across 5 countries, in North America and East Africa, namely: The U.S.A, Canada, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda.
This will be Mugabi’s first time performing in Asia, since the start of his professional artistic career. Mugabi will read from his award-nominated, Ugandan bestselling debut novel-memoir “Dear Philomena,” and from his debut chapbook “Songs For Wo(Men)”; as well as perform songs from his award-nominated, label bestselling mixtape “Songs For Wo(Men) 2”. Interweaving his life story of travel, resilience, privilege and perseverance; as a three-time stroke survivor who defied his intended death date given to him by the doctors twice.
From a childhood in Nigeria, Sudan, Bangladesh, Cambodia and Uganda. To adulthood in the U.S.A, Canada and Uganda; returning to Cambodia currently for the first time since 2005. Mugabi will trace his story through art as a medium of expression and connection; and his mission to educate, connect, and inspire others through his art and advocacy for all marginalized peoples. Mugabi will have copies of both of his books, posters, mixtapes and t-shirts for sale. Mugabi will answer any questions after the reading and performance.
