Event Details

The exhibition `women` by German artist Carola Rümper shows oversized black and white photographs of Cambodian women. Photographs taken in 2022 around International Women’s Day in Phnom Penh served as the basis for the artistic work. The photorealistic illustrations of the portrayed women are broken up by artistic modification into multi-part collages.
The photo collages are created by hand on the artist’s own printer. They each consist of approx. 40 individual parts, in DIN A4 size. This production is linked to the Starschnitt (Star Cut) method of the West German youth magazine ‘Bravo’, which was produced in the 1980s. This manufacturing process refers to the ‟Starschnitt‟ (star cut) produced in the 80s for the West German youth magazine `Bravo`.
As in the instructions of the magazine, the individual parts of the portraits are assembled with simple transparent tape.
There are shifts within the individual parts. These are intentional and break up the image of those portrayed. By using transparent tape, a colored grid is laid over the picture. Color shades emerge that are reminiscent of a painterly process. The photorealistic context is broken, it is in the process of dissolution.
The manual printing process enables precisely this process-related change. Color gradations fade and color nuances develop. Red, blue and green accents are added in the course of the exhibition.
The larger-than-life representation of the portrayed illustrates the strong character of each photographed individual. In the streets of Phnom Penh, the artist found many women looking confidently into the camera at the moment the picture was taken.
Carola Rümper works as a conceptual artist in the fields of performance, objects, photography, projects in public space and participatory projects.
The artist lives and works in Berlin.
