Event Details

Social Impact Media Awards (SIMA) began as the first and only international media competition to celebrate creative, human rights and humanitarian achievement. Today, SIMA is the most prestigious global curator of social impact, serving the independent film, academic and global social justice communities around the world.

This year, SIMA Traveling Series 2024 teams up with Meta House’s “Speak Out, Sisters” project, featuring a selection of documentaries by and about women from Cambodia and many other countries. Each night, a Cambodian female filmmaker shows and discusses her recent short film, followed by the screening of selected SIMA documentaries. Entrance is free. All films have English subtitles.

VOICES FILM FESTIVAL @ META HOUSE, DAY 2

Breaking Boundaries, Women’s Journeys of Strength and Resilience

Female director Sophea Kim began her career by participating in the production of Rithy Panh’s feature film “The Sea Wall” (2007). In 2009, she joined the founding team of the “Cambodia Film Commission” and continues to be a key member of “Cambodia International Film Festival” organizing team. Her short film GREY FEATHER (2019, 20 min) artfully explores the topic of binational relationships in Cambodia. Q&A after screening.

* INTO THE BLUE (Denmark, 2023, 28min): 12-year-old Tatheer embarks on a week-long Police boot camp for girls from a social housing estate in Copenhagen. Far from home, deep in the woods, she navigates grueling rituals, elusive social dynamics, and personal setbacks to find her place in this tender and revealing coming-of-age story by Ömer Sami.

* BLACK MAMBAS (South Africa/Mozambique, 2022, 81min): Lena Karbe follows the first all-female anti-poaching unit in South Africa assigned to protect the Big Five (Elephants, Rhinos, Lions, Leopards, Buffalo) in the Greater Kruger Park. Chosen by the (mostly white male) conservation committees as a vital marketing tool, the women stand at the crossroads of progress and a colonial past.
