Back in the 1980s the Khmer Rouge fought a guerrilla war against the Vietnamese occupiers and the Cambodian government. Hundreds of thousands of Cambodians rushed to the border with Thailand to escape the violence and to avoid the famine, which threatened Cambodia.
From safe havens in Thailand, the Khmer Rouge received aid from China and the United States to wage an insurgency against the new Hanoi-backed government. Legendary East-German documentarians Walter Heynowski und Gerhard Scheumann (Studio H&S) investigated this for THE JUNGLE WAR (1983, 90 min) – the third part of their “Kampuchea”-Triology,
