A love triangle forms when the Socialist Party sends a secretary and an ambitious technician to keep an eye on a construction foreman (Manfred Krug). After its release, Frank Beyer’s TRACE OF THE STONES (1966, 139 min, German with English subs) was shown only for a few days, before being shelved due to conflicts with the Socialist Unity Party, the GDR’s ruling communist party. Lead actor Manfred Krug was able to leave the GDR for West-Berlin in 1977. TRACE OF THE STONES became a German audience hit after reunification in 1989.
