Desperate for answers about the theft of her two paintings, a Czech artist seeks out and befriends the career criminal who stole them. The superb Norwegian documentary “The Painter and the Thief” (2022, 102 min) is an examination of the intersection between inspiration and self-destruction, and of a rapport so deep and instantaneous it feels like evidence of the existence of a soul. You suspect that at some point during the four years filming the documentary, director Benjamin Ree’s camera became part of the furniture, practically invisible.
