Auschwitz was the largest of the German Nazi concentration camps and extermination centers. Over 1.1 million men, women and children lost their lives here. ZONE OF INTEREST (2023, 106 min) – Jonathan Glazer’s radical take on the Holocaust – is a brutal masterpiece, which won him and his team five Oscars.
In 1943, the commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Höss, and his wife, Hedwig, strive to build a dream life for their family in a house right next to the concentration and extermination camp he helped create. Dispassionately examining the ordinary existence of people complicit in horrific crimes, the film forces us to take a cold look at the mundanity behind an unforgivable brutality.
