SPEAK OUT, SISTERS! WOMEN FILM FEST 2023

Sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) was a daily reality for most Cambodian women during the Pol-Pot genocide (1975-79). In modern Cambodia, 25% of women face abuse. The new Meta House project “Speak Out, Sisters” (SOS) raises awareness for the plight of SGBV survivors in the past and present among youth as a catalyst for positive change. Please be our guests for the launch of the first SOS Women Film Fest, featuring documentaries, dramas, and shorts by Cambodian female filmmakers.

7PM: CHAN LIDA’S “RED WEDDING” (2011, 52 min) – From 1975-79, Pol Pot’s campaign to increase the population forced at least 250,000 young Cambodian women to marry Khmer Rouge soldiers they had never met before. Sochan Pen was one of them. Cambodian director Lida Chan tells her story in this riveting Bophana production. Q&A with the director after screening.
