Sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) was a daily reality for most Cambodian women during the Pol-Pot genocide (1975-79). In modern Cambodia, 25% of women face abuse. The new Meta House project “Speak Out, Sisters” (SOS) raises awareness for the plight of SGBV survivors in the past and present among Cambodian youth as a catalyst for positive change. The first SOS Women Film Fest, features documentaries, dramas, and shorts by Cambodian female filmmakers.

7PM: SOPHILINE CHEAM SHAPIRO’S “PKA SLAA” (2016, 82 min) – The traumatic experiences of people who endured forced marriages under the Khmer Rouge regime have been transformed into a dance drama to help survivors heal. “Phka Sla” was created by the Sophiline Arts Ensemble as part of the Phka Sla Krom Angkar Exhibition, in cooperation with the Extraordinary Chambers in the Court of Cambodia (ECCC), the Kdei Karuna Organization, Bophana Center and the mental health organization TPO Cambodia. Q&A with Sophiline Cheam Shapiro (photo), award-winning choreographer and master of Cambodian classical dance.
