Event Details
Hiroo Onoda was an Imperial Japanese Army intelligence officer who fought in World War II and was a Japanese holdout who did not surrender at the war’s end in August 1945. When Japan surrenders at the end of World War II, soldier Hiroo Onoda was sent to Lubang, a small island in the Philippines where the Americans are about to land, his role will be to wage a guerilla war until the return of the Japanese troops. He retreats into the jungles of the Philippines to continue the war himself for another 10,000 days Soberly shifting from war thriller to apocalyptic drama to oddly sentimental buddy film, Arthur Harari’s ONODA (2021, 173min) bears the weight of its many filmic forefathers. But it pulls off such moves with such quiet force, it also represents a different kind of emergence. The film was shot in Cambodia.
