There are two main streams in Indian music. One is Hindustani classical music and another is Karnatic classical music. Hindustani classical music refers to North Indian classical music and Karnatic classical music refers to South Indian classical music. Raga is the main component in Hindustani classical music. Raga is a mood In Indian classical music created by melody. Dhrupad and Kheyal are the main forms of Hindustani classical music. To some extent, Thumri is also considered classical music. Dhrupad is the existing ancient form of classical music. The mood of Raga is expressed in Dhrupad with limited musical ornaments. Beside Dhrupad, Kheyal and Thumri, Tarana is also a significant part of classical music. The esteemed maestro of classical music in Bangladesh, Professor Dr. Asit Roy, Department of Music, University of Rajshahi, will explain these forms with a lecture and demonstration.
In the tradition of Bengali songs in Bangladesh, the main categories are folk songs, Rabindra Sangeet, Nazrul Sangeet, Kirtan, modern songs, and patriotic songs. Almost all of these types are influenced by raga. In fact, Raga is the main resort of tune in subcontinental music. An eminent artist of Bengali songs, Professor Dr. Podminee Dey (photo), Department of Music, University of Rajshahi, will explain these types of songs with a lecture and demonstration.
