At the beginning of the 20th century, Egon Schiele’s radical paintings scandalized Viennese society. His erotic expressionist paintings were inspired by his sister Gerti and later on, the red-haired Wally, whom Egon immortalized in the painting “Death and the Maiden.” In “Egon Schiele: Death and the Maiden” (2016, 110 min), director Dieter Berner focuses on the salvific power of art. Just as when we see the young Egon, freshly awoken, writing in large letters on the wall of his room the sentence ‘The work of art is immortal’. Or as when the urgency, the need to complete a painting nevertheless makes an apparently ended love rise from its own ashes.
