Event Details
Victory Over Genocide Day falls on January 7 and marks the ousting of the Pol Pot-led Khmer Rouge regime in 1979. Between 1.5 and 2 million Cambodians died from execution, starvation, and illness under the Khmer Rouge rule. A hidden dimension of that suffering was sexual violence. An estimated quarter of a million women and men were forced into marriage. How many were raped or experienced other forms of sexual violence is unknown. The Handa Center for Human Rights and International Justice, in conjunction with Khmer Mekong Films and with the generous support of the British Embassy of Phnom Penh, produced “Breaking the Silence, Sexual Violence under the Khmer Rouge,” a film about sexual and gender-based violence experienced during the Democratic Kampuchea regime and contemporary Cambodia.
Join us for a screening of the film, followed by a brief discussion. Free Entrance.
