Filmed in a real location as named in the movie title and a directorial debut of a local Bhutanese, Pawo Choyning Dorji, “Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom” (2019, 109 min) is the country’s first Oscar-nominated drama. This charming, quietly funny culture-clash film, about a young teacher in Bhutan who is posted to a remote mountain village, is a thoughtful exploration of happiness and community values.
The film is presented by Canadian teachers Ian Swift & Vicky Chartres, who have lived in worked in Bhutan for five years.
