“The Betrayal” takes the audience on a harrowing journey with the Phrasavath family (which was split asunder at the end of the Vietnam Wa) from Laos to New York. Thavisouk (Thavi) Phrasavath, one of the sons, tells the story from a first-person perspective. Self-consciously poetic and shot within a luscious inch of its life, the film’s also an engrossing heartbreaker: a family saga that spans continents, political administrations, and decades of travail to arrive at a harder, wiser place.

Step into sound, rhythm, and cosmic improvisation at the third edition of Meta Music Nights.

Phnom Penh’s legendary live act Electric Universe returns with a brand-new chapter: The Lost Universe. For 15 years, the project (founded by Berlin producer Nick Meta alongside US musicians Tim Sirois and James Speck) has fused live synthesizers, strings, grooveboxes, and DJ culture into hypnotic, psychedelic jam sessions. From stages across Cambodia to virtual performances in Second Life, the band has built a cult following — their early CDs now true collectors’ treasures.

Now evolving once again, The Lost Universe unites original members Tim Sirois (synthesizer) and Nick Meta (grooveboxes, FX) with French musicians Anthony Armenti (bass, percussion), Fabrice Marion (guitar), Cambodian DJ Sam TR8 (drum machines), poetic interventions by Antonio Pineda, and a final mix by DJ Tommy Schultz.

Expect electronic beats colliding with acoustic and electric instruments, layered with spoken word and immersive, trippy visuals.

Directed by Allison Berg (Witches in Exile) and Frank Keraudren (The Last Cigarette), THE DOG (2013, 101 min) traces Wojtowicz’s life from his early days, through the robbery, and up until his death in 2006.

What may come as a surprise to viewers, is that the robbery serves as one of the least interesting aspects of the film. Rather, the film functions in a somewhat two-fold purpose; its main purpose is to try and break through and understand who Wojtowicz is. However, in revealing the events that lead up to the robbery, the filmmakers discover and document Wojtowicz’s involvement in the 60s New York gay liberation movement.

Yet in one of the 20th century’s most extreme examples of the effects of politics on popular culture, Cambodia’s pop scene — along with virtually every other manifestation of modern society there — was brutally stamped out with the 1975 arrival of the Khmer Rouge, whose nearly four-year reign led to the deaths of 1.7 million people.

Since then, pre-Khmer Rouge pop has survived in fragments, but the history behind it has remained frustratingly incomplete. Now, after a decade of research by an American filmmaker, John Pirozzi, that history has been told thoroughly in “Don’t Think I’ve Forgotten: Cambodia’s Lost Rock and Roll” (2014, 105 min).
