The past collides with the precarious present as filmmaker Steve McQueen examines the Nazi occupation of Amsterdam, connecting the city’s ordeal with its modern journey through protests and a global pandemic.

Adapting Bianca Stigter’s monumental book of biographies and testimonies, “Occupied City” (2023, 226 min) redefines how stories of the Second World War are told onscreen. An engrossing rumination on how ghosts of the past linger in a modern city, this poetic documentary is both shattering and inspiring.
