Event Details

Gender-based violence is largely rooted in inequality, abuse of power and harmful cultural norms that include domestic abuse, sexual assault and human trafficking. The SOS project invites you to watch a set of films, which explore these topics. Khmer with English subtitles
* Sopheak, now in her late 30s, was raped by her own father when she was 15. Ly Polen’s “A DAUGHTER’S SCAR” (2014, 6 min) reflects a portrait still found in lives of too many Cambodian girls.
* Sothea Ines’ PROMISED (2023, 21 min) tells the true story of a Cambodian girl sold by her family into forced marriage in a different country. Enduring physical and sexual abuse, she gives birth to a child while still a child herself.
* Cambodian women who escape a life of abuse, sexual assault and domestic servitude in foreign countries are often treated as outcasts when they return home. BRIDE WITH A PRICE TAG (2015, 18 min) – produced by NGO Winrock – follows the story of a human trafficking survivor who was lured into a marriage with a wealthy man in China and ended up being enslaved.
* SEX WORKERS CRY (RIGHTS NOT RESCUE) from 2013 (28 min) is documentary made, and told, through the experiences of Cambodian sex workers, who directly collaborated in the production and editing of the film. Through the film these women question the policies around sex work in Cambodia that are put in place to ‘rescue’ sex workers, but end up harming and negatively affecting their lives. A film collaboration between Women’s Network for Unity (WNU) Cambodia and Paula Stromberg
* When Cambodian Thou went to Malaysia to work as a maid, her nightmare started. “SOLD OUT” by Nico Mesterharm and Lach Chantha (2009, 25 min) follows the sex trafficking survivor after her return to Cambodia where she tries to forget the past and build her new life.
