Language and sound form the foundation of the work, through which the artist, Jean-Baptiste Phou, reveals the complexity of identity and intergenerational transmission. His work is situated in the context of the diaspora experience while underscoring the universality of communication challenges. In the film, My Mother’s Tongue, the artist investigates the breakdown of communication, relationships and loss. Aug 26’s event has the screening of My Mother’s Tongue and its workshop, followed by a conversation with the artist. Through film, exchange and workshop, artist Jean-Baptiste invites the audience to go on a journey of reconciliation. Jean-Baptiste Phou is a writer and multidisciplinary artist born in France to Chinese-Cambodian parents. His art pieces tackle issues around identity, migration and minority experiences.
