META HOUSE PRESENTS: PREAH VIHEAR FILM NIGHT July 19, 7:00 PM Meta House, Phnom PenhJoin us for a powerful evening of film and discussion exploring the history, conflict, and cultural significance of Preah Vihear—one of Cambodia’s most sacred and contested heritage sites.
Perched dramatically along the Dangrek Mountains, Preah Vihear Temple is not only a symbol of Khmer identity and resilience, but also the focal point of a long-standing border dispute between Cambodia and Thailand. Rooted in conflicting French colonial maps, 4.6 square kilometers of surrounding land remain contested to this day.
Through three compelling documentaries, we trace the human, political, and historical dimensions of this conflict—from the deadly clashes following the temple’s UNESCO World Heritage inscription in 2011, to the International Court of Justice ruling in 2013, and the fragile peace that has since been shaken by renewed skirmishes in 2025.
The evening also reflects on the so-called “Preah Vihear Pushback”—a tragic chapter in June 1979, when more than 40,000 Cambodian refugees were forcibly driven into landmine-filled ravines along the Dangrek Mountains.

Join us for the opening of EXPOSURE, a compelling exhibition by Croatian/German photographer Darko Šarić, whose work captures the fleeting beauty of everyday life through analogue film and vintage cameras.

6:00 PM Meta House Free EntranceDarko’s photographic journey began in childhood, inspired by his father’s slides and 8mm films. From his first 110 camera to mastering black-and-white film in the darkroom, his work reflects a deep devotion to preserving moments that are otherwise lost to time.
“I take photos to document my life and the moments I see in the present, knowing that once a moment passes, it’s gone forever. Everything is fleeting and vanishes in an instant—life itself, and even the prints I make to freeze those moments. Nothing is permanent, and that is the beauty of life—and the beauty I want to capture.”
Through EXPOSURE, Šarić invites viewers to reflect on impermanence, memory, and the quiet poetry of the present moment.

Marcel Camus’ BIRD OF PARADISE (1962, 95 min) – a spiritual journey into culture, myth, Buddhism, death, and reincarnation – was the first European feature film production in Cambodia.
Sok, a young and imaginative boy, leaves the Buddhist monkhood to seek a more adventurous life. Tith, a friendly fortune-teller, gives him a bird of paradise, which leads him to the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh.
The screen is constantly filled with moments of wonder and beauty whether it is the dragon boat races, Buddhist monks chanting, festivals, children playing, a kickboxing match, rickshaws on the quiet streets, a theatrical reenactment of the legend of Rama, Sita, Ravana, and Hanuman and finally a visit to the grandeur of Angkor Wat.

Matthew Watson’s ‘The Girls Of Phnom Penh’ (2007, 60 mins) examines in intimate detail the complex relationship these girls have with their mothers, who sold them. The film also tells the story of the incredible friendship between Srey Leak, Minea, and Cheata. Together these girls are like sisters united against the world and all the horrors it throws at them. They face their brutal existence with courage and humor.
Their story is one of sisterhood through adversity; a friendship that offers each a very simple form of support as they struggle with balancing their childhood dreams and teenage expectations of life with the very adult lives they lead by night.

Samsara is a Sanskrit word that means “the ever-turning wheel of life” and is the point of departure for the filmmakers as they search for the elusive current of interconnection that runs through our lives. “Samsara” (2011, 102 min) reunites director Ron Fricke and producer Mark Magidson, whose award-winning films Baraka and Chronos were acclaimed for combining visual and musical artistry.
Filmed over a period of almost five years and in 25 countries, Samsara transports us to sacred grounds, disaster zones, industrial sites, and natural wonders. By dispensing with dialogue and descriptive text, Samsara subverts our expectations of a traditional documentary, instead encouraging our own inner interpretations inspired by images and music that infuses the ancient with the modern.
