A vulgar Irish cop and a straight-laced American FBI agent uncover police corruption among the former’s superiors while probing a drug-trafficking ring. THE GUARD (2011, 1h 35min) by John Michael McDonagh offers excellent escapism and guaranteed hilarity that is still worth seeking out even a decade after its original release. Popping with glorious, bright color and off-color jokes, “The Guard” is an Irish comedy and almost incidental thriller, though mostly it’s something of a bait and switch. The tasty bait (and reluctant buddies) are Brendan Gleeson and Don Cheadle, two of the best utility players in contemporary English-language cinema.
